HK2A Advertising Spending Projections 2017
15 February 2017
The result of the 2017 Adspend Projections was released at a luncheon held at Harbour Grand which attracted more than 250 advertisers, survey participants, agency professionals, reporters and media representatives. Despite a cautious outlook, almost half of the advertisers in Hong Kong (48%) believed that the economy had stabilized and would remain the same as the previous year, while 6% of advertisers expected economic conditions to improve. 26% of the advertisers being surveyed said their budget would increase while 48% said their budget would remain the same. Advertisers were also looking to shift more focus from offline to online and mobile. 2017 would likely be the first time ever for online advertising spending (51%) to surpass that of offline (49%).
“The past two years have been a testing period for marketers in terms of some of the newly emerging digital marketing platforms. In 2017, we are seeing advertisers that are more confident investing in online marketing. Top management is also confident, having seen the massive growth and opportunity of online investment as technology platforms mature,” said Raymond Ho, Chairman of HK2A.
The Executive Committee would like to extend its gratitude to Ms Cherry Lau and her team at Nielsen for the excellent work they have done to materialize the survey. Thanks also goes to all the supporting organizations, sponsors, survey participants and the attending guests who helped made the survey a great success.

For digital advertising, almost two-third of the budget goes to social media (20%), Internet display ads (19%) and mobile ads (19%). Designed to provide attendees with trustworthy updates on projected adspend figures and market trends, the HK2A and Nielsen-conducted survey anticipated that some 42% of Hong Kong advertisers would increase their adspend in 2014. Apart from key insights and updates, this year's research also explored the industry-wide impact of the new Trade Description Ordinance, the recent issue of free TV licenses and ongoing developments in mobile TV. HK2A was also very honored to help support the Commission of Poverty's work for disadvantaged members of society at corporate level. "Advertising Spending Projections 2013"
- How to Play Wise in 2013
27 February 2013
The "Advertising Spending Projections 2013" document revealed that around one third of the respondents surveyed planned to increase their 2013 advertising budgets despite ongoing economic uncertainty. That said, the proposed percentage increases were fairly modest with 58% of marketers indicating a rise of 10% at most.
Some 300 survey participants, advertisers plus media and press representatives subsequently attended a two-session results presentation luncheon held at Harbour Grand Hong Kong. Ms Celia Fan, VP, WATCH, Nielsen began the day's speeches when she shared the latest trends on advertising expenditure, media selection and planning. She then went on to further elaborate industry attitudes towards 2013's likely media landscape.
As digital media has shown the highest growth in terms of advertising budget in the coming year, Mr Rudi Leung, General Manager, Tribal Hong Kong & Guangzhou, kicked off the second round of speeches with a paper entitled "Digital and Social Trends 12013". Ending the day's proceedings on a high were two of the Territory's biggest advertisers, Mr Lambert Chan, COO, TSL Jewellery (International) Ltd, and Ms Stella Chow, Marketing Director of City Chain Co Ltd. Both went on to provide everyone with illuminating insights into their brand's epic TV commercials and multi-million dollar campaigns.
Please join us in extending our sincerest gratitude to Nielsen for their unstinting support over the last five years. We would also like to applaud our speakers for being so generous with their time and thoughts. Last but not least, our thanks to all of the sponsors, survey participants and attending guests without whom this year's survey could not have been so successful.

HK2A．CUHK Marketing Award 2012
26 April 2012
The HK2A has always been committed to nurturing the all-round development of future industry leaders. This year saw us adopt a more proactive role by proudly supporting the inaugural HK2A．CUHK Marketing Award for students at CUHK's School of Journalism and Communication. To win, entrants had to create an integrated marketing campaign for Samsung's Smartphone and Tablet product segments. The ultimate aim was to ensure the brand's competitive edge amongst users in Hong Kong's rapidly evolving AndroidTM OS market.
Our heartfelt thanks must go to Ms Elaine Tsui of Samsung Electronics HK Co Ltd who provided a thorough brief for the project and served on the judging panel on April 26. We also extend our sincere appreciation to HK2A Committee Members, Mr David Yeung and Mr Terence Lee, who generously made time to attend different presentation and judging sessions.
A total of 18 students enrolled for the course and the bold approach adopted by the 5-person winning team succeeded in grabbing the judges' attention. "The winning proposal was very well structured with strong presentation material and skills. A few more surprises and it would have been truly exceptional!", remarked Elaine.
Overall performances by other teams were also impressive and our congratulations must also go to all participating students and CUHK course instructor, Ms Annisa Lee!

"Advertising Spending Projections 2012"
- The Rise of Digital Media
14 March 2012
The 2012 Adspend result presentation luncheon and accompanying forum on "The Rise of Digital Media" proved to be a very popular follow up to our successful HK2A Media Forums 2012 from last December. Guest speakers at the event included Mr ATung Lee, Controller, on.cc; Mr Adrian Lai, General Manager, Buspak & CODY; Mr S.K. Cheong, General Manager, Broadcasting, TVB; and Mr Ka Ki Chiu, Head of Digital & Online Business Unit, New Media Group. All four media gurus subsequently gave attendees very useful insights into prevailing trends in digital media and how the new platforms could be blended with traditional formats to build brands and products.
Ms Celia Fan of Nielsen Hong Kong who led the survey for the third time was very upfront in warning her audience that 81% of the respondents feared a worsening economy in 2012. The bullish news was that despite the downturn, some 42% of those surveyed said they planned to increase their 2012 budgets to seize opportunities. Specific reasons for optimism included Hong Kong's flood of mainland tourists and the upcoming London Olympics.
"The uncertainty in the economic environment coupled with inflation has led marketers to pay more attention to digital media. However a comprehensive strategy that capitalizes on the benefits of both traditional and digital media would be more effective," concluded Celia.
"Each year our Adspend findings form strong benchmarks against which our industry views marketers' perspectives of business trends and media usage. The Association is continuing to proactively design programmes which reflect members' expressed concerns and the challenges and opportunities they face", said Mr Raymond Ho, Chairman of the HK2As.
The HK2As Executive Committee would like to extend its sincere thanks to all the speakers and Nielsen Hong Kong for making this year's Adspend luncheon possible. Our thanks also go to all of the survey participants, table sponsors and attending guests. We look forward to your continuous support in the coming year!

"Advertising Spending Projections 2011" Luncheon Seminar
23 February 2011
2011 is viewed with very mixed sentiments across industries. Some are complacent with the booming free mainland travellers. Some are cautious towards the soaring retail prices and media rates. Some are skeptical about the growing popularity of the digital media. The Hong Kong Advertisers Association (HK2A) and The Nielsen Company were happy to share with members and guests quality analyses on the outlook for 2011 and insights into all these issues at the AdSpend Projections 2011 Result Presentation Luncheon held at JW Marriott Hong Kong Hotel.
To complement the 50th anniversary of HK2A and kick off the luncheon, Mr Vincent Cheung of Canon Hongkong Co Ltd had specially tailored a presentation on "50 Years of Advertising in Hong Kong", which won rapturous applause from the audience. Ms Celia Fan of The Nielsen Company then pinpointed the challenges that marketers and advertisers would be facing during the succeeding presentation, which also registered animated feedback from the floor. The outlook for both the economy and advertising industry is optimistic, though advertisers would still press for cost effective and creative solutions from agencies given the expected rise in media cost.
As the survey predicted that social media and mobile apps would be the big story of 2011, a panel discussion entitled "New Thinking · New Media" was held to explore the impact of these tools. Mr Vincent Cheung of Canon Hongkong Co Ltd, Mr Kenneth Wong of Hong Kong Tourism Board, Mr Desmond So of JWT HK and Mr Terence Tung of One Media Group were invited to share their experience and exchange ideas with the audience. Our heartiest thanks to all the panelists.
Lastly, we would like to thank The Nielsen Company for conducting the survey and the sponsors for their generous support: Buspak Advertising (Hong Kong) Ltd, Maxus, POAD Group Limited, 3HK, nowTV, Adsfactor, ESD Services Limited, Focus Media Hong Kong, Hachette Filipacchi HK Limited, Hong Kong Cable Enterprises Limited, Hong Kong Economic Times, JCDecaux Cityscape, JCDecaux Transport, Microsoft Hong Kong Limited, Ming Pao Newspapers Limited, New Media Group Holdings Limited, One Media Group, Pixel Media, RoadShow Media Limited, South China Morning Post, Television Broadcasts Limited and Yahoo!
